LOS ANGELES - Sarah Michelle Gellar is attached to star in a feature version of the Electronic Arts video game "American McGee’s Alice," which is itself based on Lewis Carroll’s "Alice in Wonderland" novels.

In the game, Alice has grown up to become a disturbed young woman. After her parents are killed in a fire, Alice returns to Wonderland, a dark and threatening place of looking glasses, mysterious potions, nonsensical tea parties and talking animals, confronting her fears and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

The film, "Alice," is set up at Universal Pictures, where it will be directed by Marcus Nispel, who shot the recent update of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Gellar’s recent credits include "The Grudge" and the "Scooby Doo" films.

"American McGee’s Alice" became a critically acclaimed hit on the PC when it shipped in December 2000. The game received an 83% aggregate review score on Gamerankings.com, which helped Electronic Arts sell more than 488,000 units of the game and generate more than $11.8 million in revenue, consulting firm NPD Group said. The game was created by American McGee, a lead designer of the "Quake" and "Doom" series.

That same month, Dimension Films optioned the movie rights to "Alice" from Electronic Arts; horror veteran Wes Craven was attached to produce and direct.

actually, alice goes into a coma when her parents die in the fire, or so it is I believe in the game, and returns to wonderland, I have read the book and played the game. Anyway Im really looking forward to the release of this movie. I am an avid SMG fan, since the buffy years and can’t wait to see the movie. I’m not going to nitpick at the movie like some of the others Ive seen on IMDB.com. Although I do agree to certain aspects of what they said such as Sarah is a little to old to play the part of alice. But anyway, Love the game, and I hope the movie is as great as I think its going to be. Cant wait!!!!

To the person who said "This game IS a sequel to the movie":

First of all, "Alice" was a BOOK, not a movie.

Secondly, McGee’s Alice is NOT a sequel to the Alice stories. I don’t want to ruin the story for people who don’t know, but the premise is that the real-life Alice (yes, there was a real Alice) is the only survivor of a house fire that kills the rest of her family. She goes into a catatonic state and is put in a sub-par mental asylum. While she’s there, her psyche uses "wonderland" as a metaphor for what’s happening in her mind, so that she can deal with the extreme guilt she feels about being the oly survivor. (That’s why it’s become "dark and twisted".) The game explores how she deals with these issues.

Unfortunately, most people are blinded by the fighting, blood, and weapons, and don’t pay attention to the fantastic, very well-written and thought-provoking plot. This isn’t just Doom with a girl in a blue dress.

Lastly, just FYI, the events in both "Alice" books didn’t "really" happen - they were dreams. Alice can’t "go back" to Wonderland because there IS no "Wonderland".

Also, you should probably watch the opening cutscene again yourself. It shows that Alice has fallen asleep reading Carroll’s first "Alice" book. (How could the book’s Alice be *reading* the book herself?) Alice is also depicted as a young child in a photograph that was clearly modeled after the real-live Alice Liddell. (That’s why the Alice in the game has brown hair instead of the customary blond.)
